Your first day at the Local Court: what to expect
What to wear, when to arrive, what a 'mention' actually is, and how to start well.
Walking into court for the first time is intimidating. Knowing the practicalities, and having someone appear for you, takes much of the fear out of it.
Before you go
Arrive early, allow time for security screening and to find your courtroom on the daily list. Dress neatly and conservatively; it signals respect for the court. Bring your Court Attendance Notice and any documents your lawyer has asked for. Turn your phone off.
What actually happens
Most first appearances are 'mentions', short administrative appearances where your matter is called, a plea may be indicated, and the case is adjourned to a later date. You may wait some time before your matter is called; that is normal.
If you have a lawyer, they will usually speak for you and, in many matters, you may not have to say anything at all.
How to give yourself the best start
Don't discuss your case with anyone at court except your lawyer. Be polite to court staff. And get advice before entering any plea, the first appearance sets the direction of everything that follows.
